 First Words

 

I already had a lot of Englands by the time the Queen of Spades made his appearance and he was a surprise, really, but I couldn't help myself. The art was just so pretty and of course proteuswings  has her spadeking. And so the Queen of Spades was added to my menagerie of Englands. As usual, my take on the Queen of Spades is kind of different. I mean, I love England, but I couldn't help but feel that the Queen of Spades' demeanor is quite different from the usual grumpy tsun we've come to be accustomed to when we see something that looks like England. So yes, another different England.

 

Background

 

Arthur Kirkland, the Queen of Spades, is one of the younger sons of the second most powerful family in the Kingdom of Spade, the Kirklands. It's been decided earlier on that he would be Queen and would eventually be married off to Alfred F. Jones, future King of the Spade Kingdom. Arthur is told of the proposed union early on and so starts his training and education as future Queen of Spades. Once Alfred and Arthur are of age, the union is made official and they are wed. The marriage is political, a union of powerful bloodlines to keep the peace and balance of power within the Kingdom, and neither the King nor the Queen expects that they will end up falling in love.

 

Personality

 

The Queen of Spades is always a perfect picture of refinement, grace and poise. He's always impeccably dressed and reserved in word and action yet pleasant and gracious to everyone he meets. Ever calm and poised, it would take a lot for the Queen to lose his temper and even then it's a cold, quiet kind of rage that is usually disconcerting if not outright terrifying. He is aware of his duties and responsibilities as Spade royalty and takes both very seriously. Arthur loves his Kingdom and its people and he will give his all to make sure that all is well. Once he's fallen in love with his King, Alfred, he's quite protective and doting, giving him his utmost devotion and affection. 

 

Education, Abilities and Interests

 

As a member of a rich and powerful family, Arthur has many opportunities to pursue his interests and become educated in the many areas that are expected of someone of his stature. He has vast knowledge and interest in literature and history and quite adept in other fields of knowledge. He is an excellent fencer and a good shot with numerous kinds of firearms. He's shown some talent for dealing with and caring for children. Reading and sewing are two things that he does in his free time. Cooking is another hobby, but he has been kindly excused from the kitchen after showing hardly any skill in it. Arthur's mother has been known to have the Sight, the ability to see otherworldly creatures, and seems to have passed it on to him. He also has the ability to time travel due to the clock he possesses, a royal Spade heirloom that has been passed down to him.

 

The King and Unexpected Love

 

Arthur and Alfred are distant cousins. As young children, they barely see each other but for a few times each year. Arthur knows who Alfred is, of course. It's quite hard to ignore the bright, happy boy who is the future King of Spades and his future husband. They get along quite well when they do see each other. Arthur has never really had any complaints about the younger boy and even takes to liking him after a while. They don't really spend that much time with each other until the engagement is made official and they are finally given the time to get to know each other . Arthur doesn't expect much from the marriage, quite accepting of the fact that the marriage is for politics and convenience. He doesn't mind it as he understands his responsibilities and Alfred is likable. He never expects Alfred's own feelings for him and how, eventually, he will reciprocate them in full. Their union does have its surprises after all.
